It's All Grace

Amazing things can happen when you allow the Lord to work in your life.

Faith and Snow Skiing

on August 11, 2013

As we rode the chair lift to the top of the mountain, the empty chairs were passing us going back down to the bottom of the mountain to pick up more skiers.  As I examined each passing chair, looking it over, I noticed ALL that held the chair to the cable, was a VERY SMALL portion of the entire chair.  I began to think intently about the faith we execute as we plop our padded and layered bodies down into these MOVING chairs . . . NEVER taking the time to think of how it’s constructed and designed to work.  That is the type of faith the Lord calls us to act upon!  Faith, as tiny as a mustard seed.  We don’t have to know all the details, just trusting IN HIM.

We started each day with much preparation.  Why would a person go to the extreme that we went to, then NOT exercise the faith it would take to get to the top of the mountain?  We began each day by layering up, eating and drinking the necessary items needed to prevent altitude sickness, hiking to the base of the mountain in monstrous & uncomfortable boots, while carrying these poles that are only good for tripping over in the snow or hitting someone in the head, then we pull ourselves all together before getting in line:

boots buckled-check

skis on the correct feet-check

poles on the OUTSIDE of skis-check

ski’s NOT crossed-check

helmet buckled-check

lift ticket visible-check

Then move towards the chairlift line that takes us to the TOP of the mountain, so we can spend the day skiing.  A parallel of putting on the full armor of God each day so that we can endure the fun, laughter and fear that  WILL come into our daily lives, solicited or not.

While standing in line waiting for our lift tickets to be scanned, we don’t usually find ourselves contemplating how the chair is made or IF it will hold us.  We are usually distracted, watching other people get themselves into a mess trying to get into position to load, observing those who have fallen trying to stop, listening to conversations, etc.  Upon moving to the red line in the loading zone that says, “STOP WAIT HERE”, in a matter of seconds you WILL make the decision to either sit OR get run over by this moving chair!  So, by faith, we make a decision, NOT knowing all the factors.  NOT making a decision IS making a decision.

Based on your decision, you will either hop on excitedly, pull your safety bar down, never looking back while anticipating the fun and laughter that is ahead, along with some fear or pain that we will encounter on the mountain, yet fully prepared for the journey ahead – ALL ARMOR INTACT-check!  OR you will be knocked over, shutting down the ENTIRE LIFT, instructed how to “load” and possibly taken to an area where you might be treated for an injury, etc.  Another picture of how one decision can completely change the direction of the path you are on.  Not to mention all those who are following your lead.  What decision will someone else make, based on your faith?

What kind of faith do you have?  Is it the faith that has made you move forward or just stand still?  We can either chose to sit in the hand of God by faith, or get run over and wounded by satan himself!
